The aWISH project was prominently featured at AI4AS 2026 (Artificial Intelligence for Animal Science), held in Ghent, Belgium from 29-30 June 2026. The conference brought together researchers, industry representatives and policymakers from across Europe and beyond to explore the latest developments and future applications of Artificial Intelligence in Animal Science.
Organised by EAAP, ILVO, KU Leuven and Ghent University, the two-day event provided a unique platform for scientific exchange and collaboration, highlighting how emerging technologies can support more sustainable and efficient livestock production systems.
As a member of the Scientific Committee, Jarissa Maselyne (ILVO) welcomed participants alongside EAAP Secretary General Andrea Rosati, officially opening the conference and setting the stage for several days of inspiring discussions on the role of AI in livestock farming.
During the first day of the conference, Noémie Van Noten (ILVO) presented the latest developments from the aWISH project, showcasing several innovative technologies developed to automatically assess animal welfare indicators in pigs and broilers at the slaughterhouse. The presentation generated significant interest among participants and highlighted the growing importance of data-driven welfare assessment tools in livestock production.
Following the conference sessions, participants visited ILVO for a technical tour featuring demonstrations of ongoing research in precision livestock farming and agricultural technology. During the visit, Simon Verlinde (ILVO) represented aWISH, showcasing innovative research and practical applications that contribute to the future of smart and sustainable livestock farming.
The AI4AS week continued with a dedicated Summer School, organised by ILVO, Ghent University and KU Leuven, which offered participants the opportunity to explore advanced AI applications through specialised training sessions on computer vision applications in animal science and the pitfalls of machine learning in animal science.
The conference provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the progress made within aWISH while strengthening connections between researchers, technology developers and livestock sector stakeholders. Through its participation in AI4AS 2026, aWISH demonstrated how Artificial Intelligence, sensor technologies and data-driven approaches can contribute to improved animal welfare monitoring and support more sustainable livestock production systems across Europe.
