aWISH Pilots: Advancing Welfare Monitoring Through Innovation
The aWISH project is advancing animal welfare technologies in its pilots. Ongoing trials include the EBENE® app for welfare evaluations and transport atmosphere monitoring run by DUC, a European leader in certified poultry. At the same time, ITAVI has developed the first model for detecting broiler vocalizations in lairage before slaughter. Despite the challenge of a noisy environment, the model is successfully classifying sounds to better understand birds’ welfare status.

The team has also unveiled Lesion-Detect, an AI-powered system that automatically identifies and scores lung lesions in pigs at slaughter. With near-human accuracy, this innovation delivers real-time health insights, objective disease detection, enabling informed actions in subsequent production rounds, reducing antibiotic use, and supporting more sustainable pig farming. The system’s success reflects collaboration between InnoTech Vision ApS, Selección Batallé, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Carnex, and ILVO.
