On 2 October 2025, ITAVI organised a workshop as part of the aWISH Stakeholder Workshop Series. This workshop focused on broiler transport and explored science-based and technological solutions to improve animal welfare during transport.
The meeting began with an introduction to the aWISH project, which focuses on developing innovative technologies for monitoring animal welfare, particularly in slaughterhouses. The discussion then moved on to the current regulatory developments in Europe regarding the transport of broilers, covering important issues such as the availability of feed and water during journeys, reduced stocking density, limits on transport duration and strategies to mitigate thermal stress.
Laura Warin (ITAVI) presented the latest knowledge in these areas, highlighting the scientific uncertainties and the practical challenges relating to feasibility and implementation costs.
Yann Guyot (ITAVI) presented the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that modelled the temperature, humidity and airflow inside poultry transport trucks. These simulations showed that mortality risks increase significantly after two hours in hot conditions (e.g. 30 °C, 40% humidity). Virtual mitigation strategies, such as reducing stocking density or strategically leaving empty crates, were found to offer clear welfare benefits.
Discussions with industry stakeholders, including Plukon Food Group representatives, revealed a keen interest in the practical applications of the model, especially in optimising truck allocation and crate distribution to minimise mortality upon arrival.
The open discussion also identified areas for further development, such as modelling cold stress scenarios, CO₂ concentration and misting systems, and conducting field validation in various production environments.
Overall, the workshop demonstrated the value of CFD modelling as a tool for supporting decisions to improve logistical efficiency and animal welfare during broiler transport. It showed how science and innovation can inform future regulations and best practices across Europe.
