Martin Lindinger (Pilot 5, CEO Großfurtner/Higelsberger) provided insights into Pilot 5 and Johannes Baumgartner (scientific co-leader, Vetmed Uni Vienna) gave a brief update on the aWISH project, focusing on the development of AI technologies. As a keynote presentation, the project team from the Veterinary University of Vienna presented and discussed the results of the iceberg indicator “tail length.”
In the second part of the workshop, Christina Pfeiffer (Vetmed Uni Vienna) explained the aWISH data platform. Using a participatory approach, the project team, together with the focus farmers, developed visualizations to enhance the understanding of the collected data. The focus farms expressed interest in tail length plots at the individual farm level over time, to be used as a monitoring tool for tail biting. Since Austria already has a robust national feedback system for fattening, slaughter, and health data, the focus farms decided to avoid duplicating visualizations of slaughter and health data.
In the third part, again using a participatory approach, intervention strategies for optimizing animal welfare were developed for each farm. Focus farmers presented their farms and the challenges they face in meeting animal welfare standards, particularly in relation to tail biting. During the group discussion, intervention strategies were defined, ranging from installing cooling pads to optimizing barn climate to providing more and diverse enrichment materials.
