On 21–22 October 2025, Angela Ramón from the University of Barcelona (UAB) represented the aWISH project at the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) Conference 2025, held at the Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum in the United Kingdom.
Under the theme “Animal Welfare Beyond the Farm Gate: Latest developments in humane slaughter and transport of animals” the two-day hybrid event brought together professionals, researchers, and advocates from around the world to exchange knowledge and explore new scientific and technological advances in animal welfare.
During the conference, Angela Ramón presented innovative technology developed by Nuna Solutions within the aWISH project, introducing the BlinkAI sensor. This next-generation system is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision. The technology enables precise, automated measurement of the corneal reflex in pigs after stunning, providing a more objective and reliable welfare assessment.
By enhancing the accuracy of welfare monitoring, the BlinkAI sensor contributes to both higher animal welfare standards and greater process efficiency at the slaughterhouse. This work directly supports aWISH’s broader goal of integrating digital tools and data-driven approaches into livestock production systems to ensure that animal welfare is continuously monitored and improved.
Participation in the HSA Conference 2025 raised awareness of the ongoing research of the aWISH project and highlighted its contribution to the advancement of humane slaughter practices through technology, science and collaboration.
