On 17 December 2025, the aWISH project, together with the European Partnership on Animal Health & Welfare (EUP AH&W), held a Cogwheel Workshop on the monitoring and assessment of animal welfare.
Cogwheel workshops are designed to foster scientific and technical exchange between complementary initiatives where strategic coordination at EU level is essential. They aim to identify synergies, align priorities, and minimise duplication, while fully respecting intellectual property considerations.
The workshop received very positive feedback. In particular, the EUP AH&W Coordinator highlighted aWISH as a highly important and valuable project, which was especially encouraging for the consortium as the project enters its final year. Discussions emphasised the crucial role of partnerships in ensuring impact, sustainability, and continuity of research outcomes, and confirmed a shared interest in maintaining and further developing collaboration between the two initiatives. Initial exchanges on possible next steps have already begun.
The meeting was attended throughout by members of the aWISH coordination team, representatives from Utrecht University (UU), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), University of Copenhagen (UCPH), and the Thünen Institute.
This Cogwheel workshop represents an important step towards strengthening alignment between EU-level initiatives working on animal welfare monitoring and assessment, reinforcing aWISH’s contribution to a more coordinated and impactful European research landscape.
