On 1 December 2025, the Animal Welfare Conference in Brussels, organised by the Danish EU Presidency together with the European Commission, gathered government officials, researchers, industry representatives, and key stakeholders to discuss the future of farm animal welfare in Europe under the theme “Welfare of Farm Animals in the EU of 2050 – A Pathway to the Future.”
The conference featured a series of expert panels and debates addressing the challenges and opportunities for creating a resilient and welfare-forward livestock sector across the EU.
Frank Tuyttens, Coordinator of Farm Animal Welfare and Behaviour Research at ILVO, participated in a high-level panel exploring how technology and AI can support animal welfare in practice. During the discussion, he highlighted the aWISH Project and its approach to monitoring animal-based welfare indicators using automated systems at slaughterhouses.
These systems provide objective, large-scale data on animal welfare outcomes, such as monitoring foot pad health in broiler chickens, and can be combined with on-farm data to identify risk factors and improve welfare in practice. Beyond farms, this data is also valuable for retailers, policy makers, and other stakeholders, offering insights for welfare labelling, quality assurance, and national welfare trends.
The conference discussions emphasised the growing role of data, technology, and AI in building a resilient livestock sector that ensures high welfare standards while supporting sustainable and efficient production.
Through initiatives like aWISH, the livestock sector is taking steps toward a future where welfare monitoring is systematic, data-driven, and actionable, contributing to improved outcomes for animals, stakeholders, and the broader EU community.
