A master’s student, Zoë Vandekerckhove, supervised within the framework of the aWISH project was recently awarded the Flemish Animal Welfare Award for Best Master’s Thesis, granted by the Flemish Minister for Animal Welfare, Ben Weyts. This recognition sparked wider public and media interest in the topic of tear staining, leading to two interviews with Flemish media and the publication of articles in VRT NWS and Knack.
The articles highlight how research within aWISH is investigating tear staining as a visible and potentially practical animal‑based welfare indicator. Tear staining refers to dark marks around the eyes of pigs, which may be associated with prolonged stress. Because these marks are easy to observe both on farm and at the slaughterhouse, they could offer an accessible additional tool for assessing animal welfare under commercial conditions.
This line of research illustrates a core ambition of the aWISH project: translating robust scientific work into meaningful, real‑world applications that support animal welfare improvement across the livestock production chain. By exploring indicators that are not only scientifically relevant but also practical to observe, aWISH aims to contribute knowledge that can be readily used by farmers, veterinarians, advisors and slaughterhouses.
The award ceremony took place last week at the Bird and Wildlife Rescue Centre in Ostend, in the presence of friends, family, supporters and members of the press. The recognition of this master’s thesis underscores the importance of young researchers and early‑career scientists in advancing animal welfare research and innovation.
As the aWISH project enters its final year, further results and insights from ongoing research will continue to be shared. Media attention such as this demonstrates the broader relevance of aWISH activities beyond the scientific community, helping to raise awareness of animal welfare research and its potential impact on practice.
