On 2 April, ILVO (Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) hosted the symposium VarkensInZicht at its facilities in Merelbeke‑Melle, Belgium. The event was aimed at the pig production sector and research communities in Flanders and the Netherlands and proved highly successful, welcoming around 150 to 160 participants over the course of the day.
Translated into English, VarkensInZicht becomes PigsInSight, preserving the original Dutch wordplay. The name reflects both a focus on pigs and ILVO’s ambition to translate pig research into practical insights for the sector. This objective was central to the programme, which combined a plenary session featuring ILVO researchers presenting recent research outcomes with a demo fair in the afternoon.
The aWISH project was represented in both parts of the event, highlighting its relevance for innovation and animal welfare in pig production.
During the plenary session, Kenny van Langeveld (PhD student) presented the first results of the Barn Climate Intervention Study, conducted on pilot and commercial pig farms in the Netherlands. These early findings indicate that the relationship between barn climate and animal welfare is not always straightforward. The results suggest that future barn climate recommendations may need to consider animal welfare outcomes alongside traditional climate parameters when aiming to improve housing conditions.
In the afternoon demo fair, Noémie Van Noten (aWISH coordinator) and Simon Verlinde (PhD student) presented the pig welfare sensor technologies used across the aWISH pig pilots. They also demonstrated the functionalities of the aWISH data platform, using synthetic data to illustrate how welfare indicators can be visualised and interpreted.
The aWISH stand attracted considerable interest from participants, many of whom highlighted the project’s practical relevance, scientific ambition, and its potential to support data‑driven improvements in pig welfare across the production chain.
