The 31st International Animal Welfare Conference, organised by the German Veterinary Society (DVG), took place in Munich, Germany, from 19 to 21 March 2026. The annual event brings together veterinarians and animal welfare scientists to discuss current challenges and developments in animal protection.
This year’s conference was held under the theme “Animal welfare concerns us all” and featured presentations and poster sessions on topics such as harmful breeding practices, the welfare of cats and dogs, stunning of broiler chickens, and animal welfare monitoring tools for cattle and small ruminants.
As part of the programme, Maite Jachens presented results from the aWISH project, focusing on a comparison of animal welfare experts’ and poultry farmers’ views on Best Practices. The analysis identified many areas of alignment between the two groups. However, poultry farmers were more critical than animal welfare experts regarding Best Practices related to genetics, litter management, stocking densities, and upright catching, likely reflecting practical and economic constraints faced in poultry production.
The conference offered many engaging discussions and valuable exchanges, highlighting the importance of dialogue between research, experts, and practitioners to advance animal welfare in practice.
