On 27 January 2026, the aWISH Project organised a stakeholder workshop on “Best Practices in Pig Farming” at Haus Düsse, the agricultural research and education centre of the Chamber of Agriculture in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
The in-person workshop brought together farmers, advisors, researchers, veterinarians and policy representatives to exchange experiences and discuss practical approaches to improving animal welfare in pig farming. Participants were welcomed by representatives from Thünen Institute and TiHo (University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover) and introduced to the objectives of the workshop.
The programme opened with Petra Thobe (Thünen Institute), who presented the aWISH project, using the WeightDetect technology as an example of how economic impacts of welfare-related technologies are assessed. Maite Jachens (TiHo) followed with an overview of the Best Practice Guides, highlighting survey results comparing perspectives of animal welfare experts and pig farmers.
In the discussion that followed, participants highlighted practical challenges in implementing automated monitoring on farm, particularly in relation to costs and economic feasibility, and stressed the importance of genetic aspects in reducing tail biting in pigs.
Two keynote contributions complemented the programme. Karl Harleß, a pig farmer, shared his experience with keeping pigs with intact tails, focusing on the role of stress and gut health in preventing tail biting. Dr Maren Gerlach from Netzwerk Fokus Tierwohl presented the network’s work on the waiving of tail docking, underlining the multifactorial nature of tail biting and the practical tools available to support farmers.
The workshop concluded with an open exchange on the feasibility of best practices, where financial incentives and economic constraints were recurring themes.
Overall, the workshop provided a valuable platform for dialogue between research, practice and advisory networks, supporting aWISH’s commitment to developing practical and economically realistic animal welfare solutions.
